Question Thoughts on Gary Taubes

Just wondering who's watched his lecture(s) on why we're fat and what you thought of it. It was very mind-blowing for me and changed my entire approach to weight loss.

I had long believed that calories are a useless number. Seeing innumerable people watch their calories go down while their weight went up was not something that should have been happening, and yet there it was all around us. Eating less to lose weight is an absurd notion to me now, and I think it should be for all of you reading this.

...If you haven't heard/seen the lecture, just search "taubes" on youtube.

I think it's foolish to think how much you eat has little to no effect on your mass and if you gain or lose, but what do I know? I'm just a layman.

Gary Taubes work is fascinating! So is the work of Peter Attia, he and Gary have created NuSI with the intent of performing unbiased research to finally get to the bottom of what foods are actually healthy.

I also advice you to watch Peter's appearance on TedMed. These guys are going into right direction to fight the food industry. I just have a feeling they will loose badly.

Jeff, that's why you should watch the lecture...

Dare, I'll check out the TedMed talk right away! Thanks!

Honestly, it's not going to change my mind either way. I've done plenty of reading on nutrition subjects and all I can say for sure is that nobody really knows definitively what's going on. There's so much variation between different groups of people that a one-diet-fits-all approach will never work. Some people are just more sensitive to various stimuli.

If you want to know the truth about Gary Taubes and the lies of the low-carb diet industry generally I recommend watching the 'Primitive Nutrition' and 'Nutrition Past and Future' videos on Youtube.

The Primitive Nutrition Series Playlist.

Nutrition Past and Future.

In the meantime though here's one of my favourite quotes about the man -

"The more I read of Good Calories, Bad Calories, the more I think Taubes is a supercilious ignorant twat. He's got literally EVERYTHING wrong and anybody relying on 1930's textbooks to make a point is just too stupid to deal with." - Lyle McDonald.

Re: Thoughts on Gary Taubes

Do you also think Peter Attia is an "ignorant twat"?

Re: Thoughts on Gary Taubes

funny darryl that you seem to side with lyle.. especially since he advocates for a ketogenic diet kinda anti thesis to you darryl

and you should come to california and attend one of his lectures...
an ignorant twat.... he is not.
he speaks regularly for the society of calorie reduction.
http://www.crsociety.org/ wfs no real hidden agenda.

lyle on the other hand, seems to make it a habit of slamming other
nutritional adovates. As its after all, about making money....
take from a website that is not wfs
because a) for roughly the past decade, hes been one of the most influential guys in the industry, and b) he and I have a similar market niche. Although our business models differ slightly, we share the same fundamental science/research-obsessed approach thats tempered with field experience. Lyle fits the present topic perfectly because hes another guy without a string of advanced degrees and certifications (after his undergrad degree in exercise physiology, he got bored of the snail-pace of college). Nevertheless, anyone whos familiar with his work knows that a stack of degrees would be a humorous underrepresentation of his actual knowledge

Dr. Scott Connely, another nutrition/hormone genius more or less agrees with Taubes and Attia.... is he an idiot too?
