I bought a rack 2 months ago and have since regretted I did not opt for a stand. Takes way too much space, and I have never even used the "spotting" feature...

I find it much safer and more comfortable to be in a more open space. If I can't lift the weight, I just dump it. (Like described, only back wards-in back squats, while at the same time moving forward).

We just start teaching people to dump missed attempts from day one, whether it is the O-lifts, squats or ( this should be an obvious one) DL's.

My vote is certianly for the stands.

I think the stands make more sense. If you are in the rack and you dump the weight I do not see how the safety bars will help you. However, I am playing with the idea of building a rack pullup station with 4 4x6 and 2 inch steel pipe. If They are about 10 ft long I can even put a station in there for rings. The winters in South Texas are never that bad.
