Susie's Recovery Log

On April 21st, I had surgery to correct spinal stenosis and myelopathy in my cervical spine. I am now fused from C3 to C7. My surgeon used a posterior approach, and I have a healing incision of about 6-7 inches edging right up into my scalp. The surgery kind of tore apart my trapezius muscles, and I am sore as hell and stuck in a cervical collar most of the time.

Before my condition started weakening me, I was in the best shape of my life. I've sure lost a lot of conditioning and strength since my surgery. I also don't know what the future holds. I know I won't be able to ride a road bike because I have such limited range of motion in my neck now. But I'm hoping to regain enough leg strength to ride a recumbent!

I spent six days in hospital, the first four on a morphine pump. Yuck. I'm off oral narcotics as of Sunday, yippee, I hate the damned drugs. I'm taking ibuprofen at bedtime to help with nighttime discomfort. I'm able to sleep for about six hours before pain wakes me up.

Yesterday, I walked around my block once in the morning and once in the afternoon.

I'm hoping to convince my hubby to take me to the gym this afternoon so I can walk on the treadmill. I can't really go fast outside because I can't look down at my feet in the cervical collar and I have to avoid falling. (We have uneven sidewalks!)

The good news is, I can tell that a lot of the symptoms I had resulting from the cord compression are resolving---less sensory symptoms in my hands and legs---so I am hopeful I will be able to regain my strength.

I know this isn't your typical Crossfit log, but one day I AM GOING TO POST THAT I DID AN UNASSISTED PULLUP!!!!!!

And that will be right here.

Those who hear not the music, think the dancers mad.

Susie, I love your attitude. Most people would be at home complaining about the pain and you are just so upbeat and positive.

I know you will get that unassissted pullup!! And I can't wait to read about it. I wish you the best in your recovery. Keep that great attitude!

Susie, I'm glad the surgery went well. You're a tough broad and I know it'll be all uphill from here. You'll get that pull-up, don't you worry! You know everyone here is rooting for you - I don't need to tell you that. Progress may come frustratingly slow at times but the longest journey starts with a single step. Just remind yourself that from time to time.
(Oh and btw I've managed to lose 8lbs so far on the V-Diet so my metabolism wasn't broken as I'd feared...I guess IF just didn't suit me).

Re: Susie's Recovery Log

Susie, you have embraced your surgery and recovery process with the same gusto that you embrace life. It's wonderful that you are off narcotic pain meds, and that you can feel the positive effects of the surgery. Walking slowly on a treadmill can be more controlled than in mixed terrain like choppy sidewalks. The pullup is yours. It awaits your recovery.
