Wow. Now that was a no-holds barred fight. How amazing that he didn't just roll up into a ball and do the play dead thing we hear so much about. Dan'l Boone's got nothing on this guy.

Not to drag my *** back into these types of discussions...but this is what gets to me about news stories. Its a nice fluff thing to say that his "training instinct" kicked in, but I am almost 100% willing to bet in the moment he was not thinking of training...and in fact, his reaction was probably more of a basic instinctual one rather than a stylistic technique performed and learn by repition...unless he's trained to be attacked by bears, then I'll stand corrected.

Ted

- good on him, by the way...I hope to never be in any bear or "land shark" (mountain lion) situation...

Very true Ted. I thought the same thing. It was just a kick in the face.
I would also say that he was just extremely lucky, considering Ma Brown had a cub nearby. Normally he would've been lunch.

At my BJJ school we train the 'bear attack' drill every day.

Then we have cake.

I reckon somewhere theres a bear martial arts forum with a new thread called "bjj is WAYYY better than bear death-paw style, l0sers."

"yeah well, if you were in the woods, yeah, and you attacked some guy, he's not gonna just sit there is he, it's not realistic, like, trust me, I KNOW, bear death-paw suXx0rs. its only good for messin about with other bears. u need a real style for real fights."

then a brown bear pipes in with "yeah well bear lee could kick you all in"

I think more empirical evidence is needed.

Perhaps a black belt test where the testee (testes?) slather down with honey and bacon grease, then hike at night through Yellowstone leading a young goat. Walk until a bruin appears and let the games begin. Bonus points if the student saves the goat and his own butt. SERIOUS bonus points for initiating any confrontation - hey, they are training warriors here!

Been gone two weeks so it's good to see reverie continues.

Heeey Boo-Boo, wanna go steal some pic-a-nic baskets?

Gee, I don't know Yogi, that guy in the white suit and black belt looks kinda suspicious....

(looks like the guy tried the anti-yellow banana technique at first, but the bear had a good counter)
