For anyone interested, this weekend Oak Brook, Illinois is hosting the Highland Games at the Polo Grounds. I have attended this in the past to watch the competitions and had loads of fun. Some of the events include: Stone Toss, Caber (running with and tossing what looks like a telephone pole), pitching a bale of hay for height, etc.... Lots of big dudes in skirts.
Maybe some new additions to the WOD? 20 phone pole toss's for time. |

Pennsylvania Celtic Festivel this weekend at Manheim, PA. Sanctioned Highland Games Saturday, all Heavy Athletic events scheduled. Big men in kilts throwing stuff: what could be more fun? I'll be there to watch and learn.

When you start to look for them, HG events are all over the place. I compete in 3-4 every year. It's a lot of fun. They're good guys (and a few hardy gals), and the best ones (Carrollton, KY) come with beer and most of them with free food for competitors. Especially if you're new, everyone will help you.
I personally have fallen on my butt on the Stone, 56 for distance, 28 for distance, and hammer. Still, I get a little better every year. I'm gradually collecting the implements, and figuring out the footwork. The flow is the key (although strength doesn't hurt, it's not my main flaw). |
