Paleo Diet and Whey

I know dairy is a no no on the paleo diet, but what about whey protein? I have trouble getting in enough protien on the paleo diet ( I weigh about 195, and try to take in 300grams a day). Does anyone do paleo, and whey?

See Robert Wolf's reply in this previous thread.

I think he gives the best answer. Also, his blog is a great source for info.

Re: Paleo Diet and Whey

Adding anecdotal evidence, milk gives me phlem and gas like nobody's business. Whey, however, leaves me feeling fine. However, you can get cheaper and higher quality protein from unprocessed sources (eggs, chicken, beef, etc.) so I recommend keeping whey around only for rushed/lazy days.

I will add that making a roast chicken (usually fryer size) once a week and keeping about a pound of it shredded in my fridge lets me make scrambled eggs with just as much protein is about the same time as it takes to get my blender out. I still have a shake every now and then, though.

Re: Paleo Diet and Whey

I forgot to include the punchline in my post.... I'm smart.

Whey: Paleo? No. Bad for you? Probably not. The best thing for you? Definately not.

Re: Paleo Diet and Whey

Phillip you don't have to be a Paleo purist. Hell, as many people here claim to be Paleo, once you see their foods they aren't anymore Paleo than you would be by including the whey. Whey is a heavily processed item, but that doesn't make it bad for you. You can get tangled in the web of optimal v/s non-optimal and all of that fun stuff, but at the end of the day it won't make much difference provided you are taking in enough high quality foods (fruits and veggies).

I think a lot of people like to say they are Paleo, very few if any practice it as it's written (if Cordain's writing is what one considers Paleo).

Sacred truth, right there. (Coming from a fake paleo eater, about 75%)
