A few questions to throw out...

1. How many of you lifted weights prior to crossfit and what kind of results did you achieve compared to crossfit?

2. Not that this is of the most importance, but what kind of asethetic results are you benefiting from crossfit...also as compared to other fitness programs?

3. Does anyone do any isolation exercises?

4. Does anyone do any rotator cuff work, etc?

For myself, the answers are:

(1) Lifted weights in one fashion or another for 25 years. Mostly very sporadic / unorganized. If I followed anything, I tried to do a vaguely "bodybuilding" program (3 sets of 8 reps, lots of isolation moves, etc.) . . . not completely crap (any exercise is better than none), but mostly so.

I always did *some* whole-body focus (e.g., squats, and I never did split routines), but it was mostly stupidity.

Last 3 or 4 years I gradually dropped all the isolation exercises and took up more Olympic lifting and whole-body focus, under the combined influence of Mel Siff (Supertraining discussion board) and Pavel Tsatsouline. About 9 months ago I encountered CrossFit and have gradually found that everything else has fallen away . . . I pretty much do the daily WOD, or an old one, or at least a CrossFit-style multi-modal workout, every day now.

(2) Aesthetic results are good, from my point of view. I've maintained my weight (160) and dropped my waistline one belt notch, while pretty much eating anything I want (semi-Paleo . . . I still like oatmeal).

Interestingly enough, my wife probably prefers my "look" when I'm an aerobic waif (which I've also done . . . 30-50 miles of running / week). On that program, I'd be 10 lbs lighter, (150 instead of 160) and much weaker . . . but I'd look more like a magazine model (if magazine models were 5'6" and ugly).

(On the other hand, I should note that my wife's preference is probably based on remembering what I looked like when I was 25, not 47).

(3) No more isolation exercises for several years. (Maybe I should qualify this . . . for example, I love to do jumps back-and-forth over a flat bench (not landing on the bench) as training for skiing (the only sport I'm good at) . . . is this an "isolation" exercise? . . . It's certainly specific to a particular sporting need, but it works most aspects of leg explosiveness and lung power.)

(4) Not even rotator cuff, which does make some sense for some athletic needs.
