Ice Baths / Need Some Quick Recovery

Do ice baths help a day or two after a workout or do you need to do them immediatelly following a tough WOD? I did 13.3 Wed night and my quads are still smoked today. I'm doing it again tomorrow and need some quick recovery methods, any tips? My nutrition and rest is good and I'll stretch and roll tonight, anything else?

Ice will just help the pain, doesn't really help you recover though. A hot bath would probably help more.

Thanks. Got to do something to get rid of this DOMS. Did 13.3 Wed and got through 11 muscle ups. GOT to get at least 15 tomorrow so have to crank those wall balls out!!

Never mind...sorry I didnt read it fully. Im tired lol

Ice baths or cold water directly after seemed to help me the most. Like shocking my body back tight again.

I haven't ever tried them a day or two later - but when I do them immediately after, the DOMS is basically completely neutralized for me. I'm not sure about recovery, but I think it helps that as well.

It will help short term for pain but will slow down the healing process in the long run.

“When ice is applied to a body part for a prolonged period, nearby lymphatic vessels begin to dramatically increase their permeability (lymphatic vessels are ‘dead-end’ tubes which ordinarily help carry excess tissue fluids back into the cardiovascular system). As lymphatic permeability is enhanced, large amounts of fluid begin to pour from the lymphatics ‘in the wrong direction’ (into the injured area), increasing the amount of local swelling and pressure and potentially contributing to greater pain.” The use of Cryotherapy in Sports Injuries,’ Sports Medicine, Vol. 3. pp. 398-414, 1986
