Lead or Steel Shot

I've got a couple projects that require weighting things down. Does anyone know the cheapest way to get lead or steel shot? I found some at Bass Pro in their reloading supplies, but is was $10 for 3.5 pounds. Too expensive for my little projects.

Talk to a gun range or someone who would buy it in bulk and see if they can get it for you.

If it's just lead you can also do some research on fishing lure building supplies. They sell lead in bulk for use with jigmaking and stuff.

If you only need a small amount, you can also just buy some sinkers and melt them down then form them as necessary.

Re: Lead or Steel Shot

I wouldn't be surprised if you could find a better deal by looking at local industrial suppliers - steel shot used for blasting is probably good enough for your purposes.

If handling isnt an issue, definately use lead, much cheaper than steel. If you're going to melt the stuff, use tire weights - you can get them dirt cheap.

Re: Lead or Steel Shot

The cheapest way to get lead is to go to a tire store. They have tire balancing lead weights that they throw out. You can ask for these, they are usually kept in 5 galloon buckets. THere may be some silly law in your state which regulates how these are disposed of, therefore, you will have better luck at independent tire stores, then the chain stores. You can offer to pay 10 or 20 bucks for the bucket.
