Lower Back Muscle Strain

Last Tuesday morning I strained my lower back while warming up with squats. I also have history of tight hamstring muscles. I went to the doctor and he said based on the symptoms, it is muscle strain and not a disc problem.

I still have some annoying pain and in the lower back. My lower back also feels like it is stiff.

How soon do you all think I can start doing some stretching movements? Also, after stretching is it best to use heat or ice?

Re: Lower Back Muscle Strain

As soon as you can without the stretching movement having significant pain. A small bit of pain is usually fine.

As far as heat and ice go the generally rule is if there is any type of swelling use ice. If not, use heat. Another way to look at it is that heat is generally best for muscles while ice is generally best for bone/connective tissue stuff. I use swelling as the general rule though.

Re: Lower Back Muscle Strain

Ashley,
I had something similar happen to me on a Crossfit Total in December. Tried for 10 pounds more than PR on the squat and something cracked and had to drop the weight.

The few things I did were:
Ice, Ibuprofren, IcyHot (a new fangled BenGay topical).

One of the most effective was how I slept. I had a folded towel under spine arch and a pillow for behind knees. This seemed to stretch it out and I felt better than on previous injuries.

Also visited a chiropractor.

Hope that helps.
Bill
