Starting For newcomers to the CrossFit methodology

Unhappy Kipping

Hi folks,
I STILL haven't caught on to the proper timing of the 'kip' to do a pullup. I've studied the videos on "CrossFit", I've listened to our coach, practised the movements with the hips on the floor to simulate the 'throwing the hips forward when you pullup", tried just kicking to get the 'feel' of it. Haven't got it and I'm going out of my mind wanting to do it properly!! I really appreciate proper form when I see fellow crosssfitters doing various exercises. Does anyone have any advice on what I might try to get the 'swing' of things (if I may use the pun!) I CAN do the correct 'swing' but I can't seem to put the swing and pull together.

It's really one of those things that is hard to teach and your brain just has to click. Keep practicing and don't stress, it will come.

A few ideas to try:
A. Are you slowing your decent with your arms? At the top, when you push away from the bar, you ight be so tense on the way down that you can't go into that kip. Just relax and let your head do the half circle.

B. Instead of swinging and then starting your kip, do a regular pullup and then start your kipping pullup at the top instead of at the bottom.

Keep tweaking with it and you'll get it. And when you get it keep tweaking it and get it better.

When I do it, when I swing on the bottom I would focus that my shoulder would actually be forward of the bar and as Im swinging back I would kip and pull at the same time. That is as basic as I can explain it without showing it to you

Swing, when your legs are forward close your hips (meaning bring your knees up). When you start to swing back, push your hips forward violently while pulling at the same time.

A kip is a violent extension of the hip. That pull and extension of the hip is what propels you upward.
