One of the recent wods in a challenge here in the Northeast - 5 minute AMRAP of double-unders with a 3 burpee penalty everytime the rope stopped. Instead of Burpees you could add a "clean penalty" every time the rope stops. 10 cleans at 185, begin DU's....then 3 cleans everytime your rope stops. Total # of DU's is your score.

Adding a strength component could keep the scores in line.

As bad as Josh Golden's box jumps are the guy in the same video that is working out behind him is much worse. Makes it look like standards are not important at that box.

well, because of my poor judging we are no longer allowed to validate scores. Josh is disqualified from the individual competition and we now have to video all submissions or go to another gym.

Interesting.. Looks like he re did it today and it looks 100% better in my opinion (edit: until last round):

But since it is late I am guessing it wont count. It's a shame his gym robbed him of competing this year if he has been disqualified (I blame the gym/owner.. Josh is going to go with whatever his judge is saying is okay)

Sucks for that affiliate, but glad to see CFHQ is enforcing standards. I'm sure there are a lot of standards that are pretty lax for the Open, but as I say in all our briefings for our judges, it is OUR responsibility to make sure OUR workouts are judged correctly with full ROM, etc.

Makes me wonder how many of the other high rep scores are not legit. That video and the other one blew my mind -- did no one even read the description of the workout??

Good to see HQ being smart about it.

The guy doing this has a VALIDATED score of 313. I might be missing something here, but to me this seems to go against what I understand crossfit and the games to be. It makes me wonder how many other BS scores are clogging the leaderboards ahead of me, when in fact they haven't done the work to the standards I and the guys at my gym have done.

Saying they'll get found out at the regionals doesn't cut it for me, these guys won't make regionals, but might place higher than me by cheating or being cheerleaded rather than coached. I see the Josh Golden thing has blown up in this gym's face, I wonder how many other wishy washy affiliates are willing to risk their reps by continuing to validate blatantly no rep WODs. I want HQ to do more. They've taken their $2 400 000 entry fees, they should be making more of a thing about dodgy validations or the idea that the Open is a fair test of your fitness against everyone else becomes redundant.

Rant over.
The girl in this video also submitted a score of 263, her box jumps were no better.

That has to be a joke. I saw it on facebook too, but immediately assumed it was satire.

Just watched that video and was pretty appalled that they let him be falling off the box for most of the reps and call it good. But I also agree with the statement above. The guy behind him doing step ups often late in the workout didn't even TRY to stand up. He just straightened his legs, left his torso bent halfway over, then stepped down.

But how does one fix this? Publicly outing and punishing this affiliate will help, and I think clearly next year EVERYONE who validates a score will have to take the judging course, but you could just list a different person than who actually judged you. All video submissions is totally impractical.

What if they required video submissions for every workout, but didn't look at 95% of them? What if reviewing the video was like a random drug screening? Every workout 1 to 5% of the videos would get pulled and reviewed. Requiring videos would cut down on the participation a lot, but could remedy some of these issues.

Re: 2013 Open, Regionals and Games Thread

akin to the words of the great George Carlin
- “Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.” Point is, there are way too many people doing something too quickly, with too much subjectivity, not enough judging qualifications and even a large mass of people that simply aren't doing it for the integrity of the games, crossfit, the sport, etc. They just want BIG NUMBERS and to BEAT FRONING!

The facts:
1) 2013 Crossfit Open, intended to be "inclusive", consisting of some nearly 100k participants
2) A triplet with multiple movement standards (it isn't so easy as "carry a heavy object from here to there).
3) FOR TIME

The result:
A very large number of, I'll put it simply - bull$hit results, judging, scores and submissions. A VERY LARGE NUMBER.

Let them 'slight' their way to Regionals, footing the bill with their own/affiliates money only to get smoked - as has always happened. The cream always rises to the top.
