IF while sleeping?

I had experimented with IF before I started SS and GOMAD, and looking at some of the other posts on IF i think I had been doing it wrong...

When I would IF, I would finish eating all of my food by noon or 1 oclock, and not eat again til around 8 or 9 the following morning, going to sleep around 11.

I was under the impression that I would have to be awake for the fast to have any effect, because otherwise everyone IF's in their sleep.

So, I was programming my fasts to be around 10 or 11 hours, when it seems they were actually closer to 20

Is that to long of a fast, or do longer fasts have more effect on insulin sensitivity and glycogen depletion?

Re: IF while sleeping?

My understanding of it is that including sleep is OK ... many, if not most, people do it that way. I've derived great benefits doing it that way.

That's a long fast! How often are you doing it?

Re: IF while sleeping?

Sleeping counts for your fast as well. 20 hour fasts aren't bad, but I wouldn't do them all the time. I'd definitely include a few days with no fast, a few at 15 hour, a couple at 19... occasional 30 hour fast etc.

It's all about intermittency.

Long winded answer that really boils down to "no, don't worry about it. 20 hours is fine."

I believe that was Dan John's response to someone asking him about IF: "IF? Isn't that what we do between meals?"
