Pain in the hip!

Just wondering if anyone has dealt with this.

I'm an avid hockey player starting this time of year. At the end of last season I was starting to get some pain and stiffness in my right hip the day after a game. It's not unbearable pain but it does cause me to limp from time to time. Of course over the summer it went away. i got on the ice last week and the pain is starting to come back. So, i know it's related to my skating. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to treat it. I've tried ice, some stretching and they give temporary relief but it tightens up again. Also i should say that it gives me no pain while i'm on the ice, it's just the day after when i'm in my usual walking stride.

Thanks in advance for any help

Re: Pain in the hip!

Joseph,

Like you, I play Hockey and have had similar problems with my left hip.

I don't have any pain at all while engaged in activity of any kind, it's afterwards when the pain sets in. The pain is particularily bad after sleeping on my (bad hip) side.

Based on your description, there are two possible problems that I am aware of. I added links below, which offer advice on treatment. (RICE and ibuoprophen always worked well for me.) My best advice is to see a doctor.

Iliotibial band syndrome - Generally associated with knee pain, however can cause hip pain as well (in my case).
See the following work/family safe site:

Acetabular Labrum Tear - Acute Hip pain. A co-worker of mine had this, and had your symptoms like yours.

Hope this helps,
Colin

Re: Pain in the hip!

Colin, thanks. I'm gonna look over that information. i do have an appointment with my doctor. last year i thought it was an overuse type injury but i think it's a little more serious than that. Have a good season!
