The muay thai thread got me thinking about this. Has anyone here ever gone to Brazil to train jiu jitsu (or do you know anyone who has)? If so, how was your experience? Are there any places that you might recommend? Do they welcome foreigners? Thanks.

I know of a Royler Gracie Brown Belt in Cleveland, OH, I think he has travelled to Brazil for some of his training.

I can put you in touch with him if you do not get your questions answered on this board.

Been there three times. It was a great experience. If you would like to e-mail me some questions, please feel free to do so (milkmanpj@gmail.com).

I have trained in Brazil for 6 months with the Brazilian Top Team and had a great time.
No problem for foreigners.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

James,

Here are a list of questions that I have. Any help you can give me would be much appreciated.

-Where did you train (city/gym/etc.)?
-What things did you learn (i.e. just jiu jitsu or did you learn striking as well (I know Brazilian Top Team practices muay thai))?
-How much experience did you have before you went/do you think I would be able to train there with the minimal experience I have (I will have 10 months BJJ by the time I go there + some minimal boxing training)?
-Was your gym(s) welcoming to Americans (I guess I'm assuming you're American)?
-How intensive is the training (how many hours per day/days per week)?
-How long did you stay in Brazil each time?
-Is there much of a language barrier?
-Where did you live/stay (hotel/apartment/etc.)?

I am going to Brazil on the 12 Febuary with my gym to train mma with team crezio and BTT. I am lucky enough to have a friend who lived in Brazil and trained there for a couple of years. You can check out www.theknuckledraggers.blogspot.com

Can't wait as its carnival aswell.

Leon,

I realize that it's a couple of months from now, but would you post something about your experience when you return? I don't have to make plans until spring, so I'd love to hear about it.

Just a little note to say that i am visiting the VA beach area and that I am training at Gustavo Machados brazilian JJ school

The instruction and his students are top shelf and i am very proud to train there.Being a student of the Maguilla BJJ system i would like to thank maguilla for hooking me up with his friend Gustavo.

I will definately be posting detail of my experiences out there and no doubt there will be a whole heap of detail. I'll get as much info together (useful) as I can so that you don't go out there so blind.

Keep tuned evan
