I find that my grip is the weak link in a number of exercises. Any suggestions for improving this?

Try farmer's walks. They help build static grip strength.
Also try my favorite...the Captains of Crush grippers for crushing (closing) strength. They are quite difficult and come in different levels so you can move up. I find the #1 to be tough enough.

Pullups on a thick or rotating bar are great for grip. Pretty humbling too.

Bar holds for time. Try to use enough weight so that you'll only last a minute or so. Stay with the bar until it rolls off the end of the fingertips - no giving up early!

Drape a couple of towels over a pullup bar and hang for time. Try to last a minute or more.

I like deadlifting and deadlift carrying for grip. As a beginner train your grip in a functional manner e.g. carrying and climbing...if you want to specialise then get IronMind's excellent training equipment...nothing wrong with getting a #1 gripper now though, wonderfull toy!

I bought a full set of Heavy Grips and love them. Honestly, though, they're more for keeping next to the desk at work. They help with the more dynamic gripping in jiu-jitsu.

The functional grip strength that we need as CrossFit athletes is much better trained through static holds like farmer's walks.

I have a rotating pullup bar (when I installed it in the garage I didn't think about rotation). It has constantly ****ed me off but I am getting the "hang" of it (pun intended). I find that at the top of a kipping pullup, I free-fall for a moment, and I can re-adjust my grip and grab more of the bar. If I don't, I eventually lose my grip off my fingertips during the drive phase of the kip. I think this is also developing my grip strength.

Two things I have done recently that have helped.

1. When I do deadlifts, on the last rep I will hold the bar almost till failure. I have done this will partial deads as well, and that works great.

2. The other thing I have done is assisted pullups on the gravitron machine. I have put weight on it that allowed me to do at least 40 reps. My grip is fried by the end. My thought on this is that it would at least train my body for that high of volume of pullups. We'll see if it helps me get there.

Pinch gripping plates and lose the straps. Second the recommendation. Check out John Brookfield's grip tips.

First, if you use straps, stop. I only use straps after I have fatigued my grip and cant hold onto the bar anymore. I can almost get my deadlift PR without straps, might be able to if I went into it fresh. It works.
