Re: Kimbo?

Did you see the undercard? Much better fights IMO. Watch online at www.elitexc.com (wfs)

Re: Kimbo?

The announcers claimed the "tap" was a thumbs up... we thought he tapped too. I think Kimbo needs to get into a real MMA camp and he might improve.

Now, how about that freakin' EAR he popped.... YOWSA..... why didn't that dude drain that before the fight? Bad move, cost him the fight.

Re: Kimbo?

At around 2:45 of the first round, Kimbo gives the ref a thumbs up. No tap. However it seems obvious the ref did what he was told and made sure Kimbo would win. Even the announcer called it an "unfair break".

Since you made this statement, I assume you know that he is trained by Bas Rutten. You don't think Bas is a good trainer? Certainly he was a great fighter, I personally have no idea if he is a good trainer or not.

Re: Kimbo?

Raw power. Yes.
Great story. Yes.
Real boxing skills. No.
Ground game. No.
Any other MMA skills. No
Conditioning. No

Raw power (the ability to deliver a knockout in dramatic fashion) + a great story (the guy was homeless, then was a street fighting legend) = great drama.

That's what Kimbo is right now. Can he develop into a serviceable pro? As was stated earlier, if he gets into a proper MMA camp, continues to train his *** off for a few years, then....maybe. Why only 'maybe'? He's not young (I know, I know, neither are many other MMA stars, but they've been fighting PROFESSIONALLY for many years). He's surrounded by bad people (Bas is being paid to train him so Bas doesn't count, I'm talking about the porn producers/directors and other shady characters he is generally said to run with). There are plenty of other, more skilled fighters out there training that don't carry as much baggage as Kimbo (as in, can he unlearn all of his bad habits).

I honestly wouldn't mind seeing him on a UFC card, fighting one of the lesser Heavyweights, just so he could be further exposed. As if last night didn't remove any doubt. Just my two cents.

Michael, good point. However, I'm not certain that Bas alone is going to be able to control this guy and really get him to buy into what he's selling. Kimbo needs to go away to a camp for a year and do nothing but train, train, train. No media. No porn stars. No ESPN. No ABC. Just train. After that, he needs to be tested against a decent fighter with a decent record. Let's face it, distractions can devastate great fighters (i.e., Chuck Liddell), imagine what they can do to untested, raw, street fighters.

I think he needs more training. Give him some time.

I think if EliteXC was actually trying to show the US what mma is they should have signed Fedor to headline the event... America will eat him up if they just see a few of his fights.

A freak of nature with a limitless gas tank, great boxing, great ground skills and finishes fights.. #1 p4p fighter in the world. Instead we get KIMBO SLICE!?!??

Sad day for MMA

Re: Kimbo?

Anybody other than Kimbo Slice would have been a ratings disaster for CBS.

Re: Kimbo?

not impressed whatsoever. did anybody else find themselves laughing out loud during the Kimbo fight? Both him and Thompson...I liked Thompson's use of gravity as his G&P power source.

I'm only watching again to see a Lawler v. Smith rematch and a Carano v. whoever fight...and I'll record it so I can fast forward through all the bologne.

it was ridiculous how the ref gave Smith 5 minutes to recover and then they call the fight 2 minutes into his 5 minutes...just awful. like Smith said, just give him his 5 minutes.

Busta Rhymes didn't win me over either.
