Crossfit games athletes and their physiques...

So I have just finished watching the 2009 Games and I have also watched the video on the 2008 Games. One thing that really surprises me is how muscular these athletes are. I mean some of these guys are huge and look like bodybuilders. I know Jason Khalipa was a former bodybuilder and that explains his physique but what about the other guys? They are all very lean yet have significant amounts of muscle mass. I'm wondering how they get like this doing Crossfit and following Zone/Paleo. Whenever I ask about gaining weight people automatically tell me to do Starting Strength and drink a GOMAD. I highly doubt any of these athletes do this so i'm curious to know what else they do besides Crossfit to get the physiques they have. Is it reasonable to assume that doing a METCON + CF Strength Bias + Zone/Paleo will produce results like this or would these guys all have come from a bodybuilding/powerlifting background and already had significant mass before starting Crossfit? Even the smaller guys like Spealler look amazing and then you have absolute freaks such as Lance Mosley who is just a monster. If guys like Mosley do indeed follow Zone, how on earth do they stay so big while eating hardly any calories and doing such intense workouts?

I didn't think many of the athletes were that big, just incredibly cut. Jeremy Thiel (a person who has a body i aspire to have. lol) doesn't seem that big, just cut and defined.
I think it's more a product of not having much bodyfat than it is being giant.

They win the games because they are strong. You need to be strong as well as aerobically fit to be the best of the best CFer. If they are strong it is because they do some strength focused training. It is not magic.

They lift heavy stuff and eat alot. And destroy metcons. THIS IS JUST ME but i dont think many, if any, of the top 10 male finishers follow a strict zone.
For instance the number 3 guy (cant remember his name, the firefighter from washington i believe) doesnt paleo or zone.

Didn't Mikko talk about what he ate in his documentary? I think it was something along the lines of paleo, but I don't know if it was zone. He did say he cheats at the game, and when they asked with what he said he loves pasta.

He also said in the documentary he eats a ton, even when he's not hungry.

You're right, they probably didn't do SS + GOMAD. Sadly most people weren't lucky enough to have that information when they started lifting, so instead they got big much slower, accomplishing over years what someone on SS + GOMAD could accomplish in months. I know this from first hand experience.

Re: Crossfit games athletes and their physiques...

Every person is a bit different but a significant number of the top games competitors do seem to have come from a strength background and then switched over to Crossfit. This is certainly not the rule however. Just being really strong won't get you far in the games. As for diet, I personally believe there are times for zoning, time for paleo and times for stuffing your face. It all depends on what your goals are. If you want to lean out, a good idea towards the end of your games training, go zone. If you just want to be healthy and lean, maintaining you weight, paleo is probably a good option. If you want to lift really heavy weights and get strong, stuff your face every chance you get.

No, at least no one with any background in fitness. But that's a discussion that usually goes nowhere.

The CF games athletes are in great shape but they would be able to enter a BB show.

SS is not a panacea either but is a good first program especially suitable to teenagers and those with limited exposure to lifting, e.g. the majority of people posting on this forum.
