Chest pain when doing dips.

So I introduced someone to CF today, and may have gained a training partner. He's pretty fit already (275x5 deep squat, ~5 months of KB training, got 8 17s on his first ever Tabata squats). He even managed to do a pretty stable ring support.

He said, however, that when he was doing the support he felt some pain/pressure on his sternum, which intensified when he tried doing a dip. He also mentioned that he can do about 5 bar dips before he starts to feel it. Is this normal or common? Does anyone know what might be causing it?

Thank you in advance.

Re: Chest pain when doing dips.

It's been discussed several times, but I've never seen a real answer on it. Check the links at the bottom of the page for the other discussions, and hopefully someone will be able to offer some decent info...

Re: Chest pain when doing dips.

When i was little like in sixth grade i couldn't do a dip because liftign myself up on parrallel bars made my chest hurt. it is a very vague memory. i also couldn't do a single pullup. i grew out of it.

one time i made somebody do dips on a dip station and they couldnt do it bc of pain, i just dont recall where it was except that i found it very perplexing.

Seriously?

I've answered this question dozens of times.

For a lot of people who aren't used to stabilization work with the pecs (there's honestly not a lot of barbell exercises that simulate this although it's possibly to build up some resistance), the stabilization work can cause the muscles to pull the costal cartilages away from the sternum a bit causing the pain.

He basically needs to avoid significant pain on movements like these and build into it slowly. More or less with lower intensity exercises such as rings pushups at first or things of that nature.

Maybe it was some other forums. When you post tens of thousands of times everything kinda blurs together. -_-

I think it was here but it's not like the search function is that great. Either you get plenty of hits and you have to sift through it or you get a gagillion hits in which you'll never find the key words in those threads because they are random threads like workout logs threads.

I have been getting this same pain too! I dont understand how to build it up so I can do dips normally. I try and focus enough to make my chest not stretch as much but it just isnt working. I love dips and am abuot to try ring dips soon. I cant wait. except i might have to... any suggestions on how to build into it????

Re: Chest pain when doing dips.

I used to get that too! I just did it regardless, it cleared itself after a while and my strength limited any excess loading IMO so it wasn't much of an issue for me - i kinda used it to judge good depth (being a stupid kid!)

Re: Chest pain when doing dips.

How to build into it is simply mastery of the basic ability to hold a ring support, forearms off the straps, rings slightly turned out to very turned out and eventually having the triceps not resting on the lats.

Another is to warmup with some ring support holds and holding the bottom of a ring dip. It's a good idea to warm up with some basic bar dips or supports.
