Re: rank WOD's for qualifiers

I haven't had a chance to look at all of the workouts and compare, but Canada East and Canada West were the only ones to lay out all of the 10 components of fitness and apply them to the weekend's workouts. They weren't just random hard stuff thrown into workouts.

I competed at the Canada West qualifier, so maybe I'm biased but the 1st workout was THE MOST DIFFICULT thing I have ever experienced! So was our final workout ("Jackie") but that was for different reasons.

Canada West WOD #1:
AMRAP 20 min:
10 Wall Ball Shots 14#/20# to a 10' target that was a 4" wide beam... you miss and you were running into the parking lot to collect your ball
10 Box Jumps 20"
10 Deadlifts 145#/205# no dropping permitted
10 Burpees to perfectly straight arms (no clap) ears visable vertical and hips extended

Re: rank WOD's for qualifiers

I just went through all of the workouts for the qualifiers...

There were a couple of qualifiers that I felt were missing some of the 10 components of fitness. If you feel otherwise, post how you felt the component I'm listing was tested.

NorCal - Accuracy
SoCal - Speed (all workouts were 10+ min)
Rocky Mountain - Endurance/Stamina (all were 4-7 min WODs)
Africa - Speed and Accuracy
Northwest - Agility, Speed, Endurance

Re: rank WOD's for qualifiers

I don't think you can purely look at it that way. These workouts should do as good of a job as possible in testing WCOTAMD, but with 3 workouts, it's not going to be possible to get a full picture.

For example, even though "speed" was tested in Canada East with the Burpee/Kettlebell swing workout, it only tested speed on two movements. It didn't test speed on something like a 100m dash, or a 50m swim, or speed on a deadlift, etc.

Likewise, the deadlift 1rm tested strength, but it didn't test upper body horizontal pushing strength at all. And so forth.

As far as what WODs were the "toughest," which is very different from the former... For, the toughest workouts are the 4-7 minute type workouts where you are pushing moderately heavy weights and hitting failure at the very end of every set + doing something tiring like burpees, thrusters, full cleans, full snatches, wall ball, or box jumps + running + working the whole body. For a qualifier to be especially tough, doing reps on something a few hours after doing something similar in an earlier workout really sucks.

I think I would be most miserable doing the 2008 Games. After that, probably the Midwest Regional:
Workout #1:
21-15-9 Reps for time of:
Deadlift - Men 275LBS/Women 185LBS
Pull-ups - Chest to Bar

Workout #2:
5 Rounds for Time of:
7 Double Kettlebell Thrusters - Men (2) 24KG/Women (2) 16KG
11 Burpees

Workout #3:
Row 2000m - All dampers set on 3.5

Workout #4:
30 Power Clean and Jerk - 135 Men/95 Women
One lap around Rogue - approx 450M
30 Power Snatch - 115 Men/75Women

+1 for the Midwest Regional Qualifiers. Bill did an excellent job of selecting WODs to ensure that the winners were well-rounded beasts who could handle moderate-to-heavy weights. I have no doubt that the 12 qualifiers would all do well in the 2008 Games. Though who knows about this year...

Re: rank WOD's for qualifiers

Can't believe the Great Basin WODs haven't been mentioned. I didn't see any other qualifier that had such long metcons with what would be considered "heavy" weight by last years crossfit games standards. All 3 workouts had a high-rep scheme of either olympic or powerlifting.

Workout 1: 5 snatches, 135#, 100 yd sandbag carry w/90# sandbag, 4 snatches, sandbag carry, 3 snatches, sandbag carry, 2 snatches, sandbag carry, 1 snatch.

Workout 2: 5 rounds for time of (7 deadlifts 275#, 30 air squats, 7 HSPU)

Workout 3: 800 meter run, then 3 rounds of (10 squat cleans 155#, 20 CTB pullups, 30 box jumps on 30" box), then another 800 meter run. Box jumps had to be jumps, which should sound obvious, but I saw another qualifier where the 24" box jump standards allowed competitors to just step up onto the box.

No contest in my opinion.

Re: rank WOD's for qualifiers

I competed in the Canada East Qualifier, and our 2nd WOD was;

5 rounds of;
5 Clean and Jerks @ 135pds, &
5 Muscle ups
With a time limit of 10 minutes

By no means is this workout physically the hardest i've seen at any of the Qualifiers, but with such a short time limit, I think it ranks up near the top. Out of 50 men competing, only 12 were able to complete it ar RX'd.

and out of 30 women, none completed it. (women did C&J @95pds)

Pretty cool question, Corey! A related question, consistent with what Coach charged the regions to do, would be "Which of the regions chose WOD's and a format that is MOST LIKELY to identify the athletes who will do best in Aromas?"
