Paleo needs a new name
Debunking the Paleo Diet
I thought this Ted talk video was interesting. It has a click bait title, as Dr. Warriner agrees with some principles of the diet paleolithic man ate. She disagrees with the modern "Paleo Diet" press, and some misunderstandings about modern agriculture. Start at 16:58 if you'd like to see her conclusions about how paleolithic diets are applicable to a healthy diet today. |

![]() Anyway, I agree it was an interesting talk. What's most interesting to me though, as some who's followed the science from S. Boyd Eaton's well reasoned Palaeolithic-diet hypothesis back in the 80's through to todays low-carb fad diet Paleo zealotry, is how easy it is to debunk the low-carb Paleo argument when you take an objective look at the evidence. As for a new name for the diet, Brenda Davis RD, in her talk "Paleo Diet: Myths and Realities", refers to it as "New-Paleo", however, I prefer "Paleo-Atkins". *All links wfs* |

Re: Paleo needs a new name
I've known all along the paleo diet was bs. Paleolithic man did not eat bacon and almond butter lol. He did kill saber tooth tigers and wooly mammoths, neither of which we have today. And there is evidence that early man ate grains.
Paleolithic mans Fran time would have sucked as well. |

Re: Paleo needs a new name
Hmm. I don't know why the original video link starts in the middle for me. It's worth a watch from the beginning.

The modern Paleo diet definitely has benefits. I think it's a pretty safe guess that the average American eats more carbohydrates from grains than they need. (I've tried strict Paleo though I don't exclusively eat that way currently.) I think portraying it as similar to the paleolithic diet, or naming it the Paleo Diet is inaccurate or misleading, though it does represent a simple idea. The true paleolithic diet was probably vitamin- or nutrient-poor compared to our options and variety today. I like how she points out differences in modern fruits, avacadoes, etc. The video we're talking about provides evidence of grain, legumes, and tubers in the paleolithic diet 8:25 - 9:33. As a dentist, I geek out a little when she talks about evidence that can be collected from calculus. ![]() |

Re: Paleo needs a new name
I hadn't seen that before, Dare. It's interesting. I was referring to the "Debunking the Paleo Diet" video linked in the first post of this thread, from 8:25 to 9:33.
Also, here is an interesting video that in part talks about how dental calculus is studied to learn about diet. The example here is from teeth only 800 years old, but the same process applies to older teeth. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5UWed7Dn_I (maybe not WFS due to breastfeeding - no nipples shown - and cesearean section shown from a distance) |

I dont know about cavemen but Gladiators were pretty cool! And from all accounts, they seemed to be anti-paleo. i know that i participate in combat sports, and my best performance comes with grains. as far as health marker numbers, i have no idea. i just know how i feel. carbs are a fighters friend. |
