You might try visiting your local farmer's market instead of the grocery store, too. Fruit that was picked half ripe on the other side of the world usually doesn't have much taste. Besides having fresher fruit, farmer's markets often have lots of different varieties, including heirloom varieties. Katherine |

Re: is fruit mandatory on paleo?
Fruits, like most plants, are seasonal. You don't *need* them. And eating full fruit is much better than juice (ever tried eating the equivalent number of oranges that go into a large glass of OJ?!). If you're eating locally/seasonally, you'll naturally be limited in your fruit consumption.
I see them as a treat, like alcohol. Not forbidden, but not a staple either. Of course, it helps that I'm allergic to half the fruits out there, it makes them easier to avoid ![]() |

Re: is fruit mandatory on paleo?
I have seen this. It was one of the funniest things I have ever seen. (my boss went on a massive soup diet binge)

Re: is fruit mandatory on paleo?
One guy did a test where he went on a no-fructose diet (no juice, no fruit) and measured his cholesterol, LDL, albumin, and iron levels. He then changed his diet to have 14 ounces of OJ upon waking and before bed (so 28 ounces of juice per day) for a week and then measured his numbers again. Here's what happened:
Cholesterol: 203 -> 243 LDL ("bad" cholesterol): 127 -> 165 Albumin( renders testosterone inert): 4.3 -> 4.9 Iron: 71 -> 191 All the latter numbers are considered out of the healthy range. It never mentioned his weight oddly enough, but I think this shows that a high level of fructose intake can have a negative effect. So yeah, feel free to eat fruit, just don't have massive amounts everyday. |
