September: 'Turkish Get-up' challange

this is a daily challenge that requires participants to add an addition 2 reps to the previous days total for the duration of the month. so the first day will be 2 reps (1 right arm & 1 left arm), the following day will be 4 rep (2 right arm & 2 left arm), followed by 6 reps, 8 reps, and so on.... each individual will be allowed to use either a kettlebell or a dumbell. weight can be scaled as needed.

since i began crossfit the 'turkish get-up' has always seemed to be such a good all around functional movement. since this movement is based on core to extremities development without too much focus on a particular muscle group i felt it would make a great daily challenge. if you are not familiar with this movement i recommend watching the videos in the execise & demos section of the main page. here is a link to the first video (WFS)

if you join this challenge late you will be able to 'buy' into the challenge by completing all the previous days totals.

I am looking forward to doing this challenge with everyone this month!

Awsome challenge.

Im recovering right now though
Cant train till sep, 21st.

So I guess im gonna use a lighter wieght so it could be part of my warmup, propably one pood (35 pounds) and start with umm...

42 getups each arm. Can we alternate every 2, 3, or whatever ???
Or do I have to finish 42 on one then 42 on the other arm.

i am going to alternate arms every rep, but feel free to do them as you please. as long as the total reps of the day are completed you are rx'd.

i would say always go with a weight that won't compromise your form or put you at risk of injury. With that said you might want to choose a weight that is a bit heavier then you think is possible at high reps and hopefully throughout the challenge your body will adapt. i think with this challenge our balance, accuracy, and coordination is going to develop faster then our strength. so by the end of the challenge we all should be much more competent at handling heavier weight for this movement.

Re: September: 'Turkish Get-up' challange

week 1: day 1 'turkish get-up challenge' #15 - 2 reps total

i am really looking forward to this challenge. i didn't expect this challenge to be as popular as the 'thruster challenge', but this is a pretty low starting turn out for any challenge. hopefully a few people will come across this early enough that the buy in is fairly reasonable.

i am going to use a 1.5 pood kettlebell for this challenge, but today i decided to scale back only using #15. i really wanted to focus on the proper form without worrying about dropping 53lbs. on my head. the first rep with the right hand went well, but the second rep on the left got loose on me. so i redid my left to make sure i had it down. tomorrow i am going to up the weight to the 1.5 pood.

don't forget this movement isn't just about standing up, but also laying back down with the proper form.

good to have you on board. just keep the weight light or no weight for a first few days of the challenge to get your form down without stressing the shoulder. turkish get-ups shouldn't be too bad for the shoulder since it is locked out most of the movement. it uses mostly stabilizing muscles which will probably benefit a bunk shoulder.
