Abs on top of WOD?

I'm just curious if anyone does any other ab routines on top of the WOD? It seems like there are somedays where I can't even lift myself off the ground because there are so many ab focused excerises and other days there is nothing. I also understand about driving from your core and do.

I find doing skill work works the core hard.

l-sits, ring work, handstands, plank variations etc.

knees to elbows are a good one as well, not much of a skill but certainly hard work when done under control with no swinging.

Re: Abs on top of WOD?

Are you talking about ab or core work? When I hear abs, I think aesthetic purposes and when I hear core, I think strength purposes.

I do lots of core work besides the WOD, including a lot of what Brent said. Gymnastics work is awesome.

Turkish get-ups are really good for core work too. Not to mention really fun.

My abs are about as defined as they will ever be and I don't ever focus on them. I'm also like 6% body fat though.

According to an informal study they did over at T-nation (link here, mostly wfs), the bodyweight chinup is the best ab exercise there is!

Wow. That seems strange to me but is interesting.

Your core muscles need rest, too. You wouldn't want to do massive numbers of GHD situps every day any more than you would want to do massive numbers of pullups or squats.

i would agree with that, i often thought there was something wrong with me for this as nobody i know has ever mentioned it.
i also find pull ups with a dumbell held between the ankles hits the core damn hard too

Re: Abs on top of WOD?

Jason,

It really all depends on how much I have or havent worked my core on WODs. If it seems like its been a few days, I'll sometimes throw in a few sets of situps or maybe some light OHS or knees to elbows. A lot of times this is done as part of my warm-up or cool down anyway. Realistically, once I started working my core and eating right, my abs just popped out. I stick with the basics and it works for me. I don't do any crunches or other as mentioned "aesthetic" exercises. I think they are useless and I leave them for all the "pretty-boys".

100 abmats at the end of a wod isn't going to kill anyone.

Re: Abs on top of WOD?

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I always been a firm believer of driving everything from your core. Hell I even teach my swimmer to kick and pull from it. I am starting to notice little things popping out nicely because I am regulating my portions better. Thanks again.
