Re: CF Games on ESPN 2

Me too. And we think CrossFit is popular now...

Think about how many people started playing poker (myself included) after ESPN 2 aired the World Series of Poker back in the day. Chris Moneymaker was the man! It is kinda weird to see CrossFit become mainstream like this, but it's good to spread the message of good fitness to as many people as possible. It's definitely more healthy than playing poker at a casino.

Hope this turns out well.

It's the coverage from when it was shown on ESPN3 (or U, whichever one showed it). When you turn on your XBOX, sign into your profile but don't load the game disc that is in the system. Go to Video Marketplace, and ESPN should be one of the options, might have to scroll to the right a bit to find it. Download it and then go to the fitness category, Crossfit is under that. It worked when I tried it out two days ago, but last night for some reason every time I try to run ESPN it just takes me to a volleyball game, weird...

Watching some of it now. Not too bad.

Can we get rid of the air squat? If you have no exposure and turn this on and see a bunch of dudes air squatting, I'd start snoozing. Having experience with some of the air squat wods, I understand. But can't we replace them with something more dynamic? Jump squats? Box Squats? Broad jumps? I think it would be more exciting for the naive viewer?

Blasting out pullups looks cool. Running is OK to watch for short periods and then once you add a barbell, things can be fun to watch.

Using hands on squats just isn't right. I like how they call it "body english" to get from one point to another, and sound all excited about how Annie T. figured out she could use her hands to help go faster.

C'mon...just call it cheating, no different than if you climbed up the pullup bar frame with your legs to help get your chin up and over the bar.

Yeah, I agree with Eric on the use of hands with an air squat. My students and I figured this one out really early, and I made sure people didn't do it. What's the point? And no, it's not a 'kipped' air squat.

Re: CF Games on ESPN 2

I'm a bit curious as to some of the reasoning behind using hands on squats being any different than kipping pullups. If the goal is to complete the exercise meeting the parameters as quickly as possible, wouldn't it be the same thing? For the chest-to-bar pullups they were doing, the legs assisted meeting that parameter. My understanding is the kip is to achieve the same amount of work just dispersed throughout more muscles. For the air squat, hip crease below knee, then extend at the top. Arms just allow the competitor to complete the workload using more muscles.

How does using arms in the squat differ?
