Odd sound from knee

Here's another one...

Near the bottom of squats (I pretty much just do air squats for the moment due to lack of equipment, or squat with a relatively light box of books as it's what I have...), I hear an odd noise from my left knee.

It's not a click, pop, snap, crunch, or any other sound I usually associate with a problem, and it's happened for some time without any pain, but I'm just curious. It's hard to describe... it's almost crackly, and indistinct (ie not a firm "click", but a bit longer than that)... sort of like if you have tape where the adhesive is getting gooey and you pull it off a wall (bad explanation, but I'm really searching here). I can't 'feel' anything weird in my knee when I hear it.

Any idea what this is, or if I should be concerned?

Re: Odd sound from knee

It's called crepitus--a sound faintly like Rice Krispies when the milk first hits it. Consensus is that it involves the kneecap, but it's only of clinical concern when accompanied by pain, swelling, heat, or limitation of ROM.

Fuggedaboutit.

Ah, good-- I figured it wasn't too bad, but it was just weird enough that I was curious.

Rice Krispies... better metaphor for the sound, too.

Re: Odd sound from knee

Hey Victor,

Crepitus is nothing to be concerned about on its own, like Susie said, but just be aware that it can be an indicator for tendinitis in the patellar tendon. Just make sure you're taking proper time to warmup and stretch as well.

Re: Odd sound from knee

During the warmup is mostly when I notice it, which I suppose is a decent indication that the warmup is working (although there's still some near the end, I think it gets better as I go).
