why can't I do a simple air squat???

For some reason I can't do an air squat at all. Its the most frustrating thing in the world. Sometimes the air squat feels fine, and then I'll mark off where my feet were with tape, but I'll come back the next day and that same foot position feels extremely uncomfortable and I cant get a single straight-backed air squat done. Sometimes my knees hurt when I do them, and sometimes they feel great. Sometimes I can go way past parallel, like A2A, without losing lumbar extension, and sometimes I can't even do a half squat without some backbending.

Wtf is going on with me?????

This is the worst feeling ever not being able to do a simple air squat, even after crossfitting for 4 months.

I just don't get it

Anybody ever experienced anything like this or know of a way to fix it???

You lack kinesthetic awareness (i.e. the position of your body in space). You just need to keep practicing until the brain and body make the connection on where you need to be.

Sounds to me like you need some squat therapy.

Check out this video from again faster. I've been doing kettlebell squats as a warm-up and it is helping my overall squat form.

Re: why can't I do a simple air squat???

are you doing some kind of warm up prior to attempting to squat?

any history of arthritis? or any inflamatory conditions?

have you tried box or medicine ball, for squat depth indication, air squats?

try holding post and doing air squat.

are you properly aligned over your feet, knees tracking over feet, thigh to torso angle? shoulders properly aligned over feet?

these all afffect the way an air squat feels.

Do a light jog before you start working out. Run a half mile, get the joints lubricated and ready to move around. After you run - stretch! Get your groin, hips flexors, outside of the hips, knees, and ankles ready to go. Then start squatting. I see too many people just try and hop into a workout with out stretching or loosening up. It will take you half of your workout just to feel decent. Run - stretch - workout.

I find that stretching my calves (WFS) makes the critical difference between air squatting comfortably or not.

I believe it.

I have an imbalance where my left calf is more flexible than my right calf. Because of this, I can only do full ROM pistols on my left side.

Such inflexibility in either/both calves can also interfere with getting deep enough in the air squat as well.

You could also try doing "face the wall squats". You stand a few inches away from a wall, facing it (Or stand further away and move in closer as you can). With your arms hanging down in front of your body, between your legs, squat down without anything touching the wall, like knees, shoulders, head.

Here's a video : wfs : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31z5DR9P1kw
