100 push ups

I have a client who wants to do 100 consecutive push ups. There is a site www.http://hundredpushups.com/index.html (wfs) that has a 6 week program for getting 100 push ups. However, we do a lot of push ups in CrossFit already and I told him this would probably lead to overtraining (esp his arms, chest, shoulders). Basically, you would do push ups 3 x week.

Any thoughts ?

Re: 100 push ups

Link is broken.
There's nothing wrong with pressing your own body weight off the ground three times a week. He could over exert/injure himself with a poor diet/sleep habits/not warming up properly. He could certainly do this program AND crossfit. If he is using this program as his main program for fitness then he won't get great results. Still, he has a goal and he is going for it which deserves some praise. I certainly can't do 100 push ups unbroken.

Re: 100 push ups

He could work it like the 100 burpee challenge- any push-ups done during the workout would count toward the total. But I didn't look at the link so I don't know.

Re: 100 push ups

How many continuous push-ups is the client good for now? For me, push-ups are more like strength training than endurance training. If your client can already bang out 60 push-ups, that is much different than if he is completely done after 10.

Corrected link is http://hundredpushups.com/index.html (wfs)

This program isn't particularly high volume. It shouldn't be a problem to add in addition to CrossFit. I'm assuming the client is already reasonably fit if their goal is 100 pushups.

Re: 100 push ups

That's a pretty well-established pushup program for doing 100 consecutive. If that is his goal, than he should do less or no pushups in his CF workouts. In this case, the pushups in CF conflict with his 100 pushup goal, there is no issue with amending CF to fit your goals.

Re: 100 push ups

Also, unless your client can already do 60+ consecutive pushups, it is unlikely that he will get to 100 consecutive pushups in 6 weeks on that program. I started at 30 and after six weeks my max effort of consecutive pushups was 50. A big improvement, but if I wanted to get to 100 I think I would have had to do the program at least twice more.
