Strange Mid-Back Pain

I've been having some back discomfort/pain for a bit now, and I'm curious if anyone has had something similar happen that they've managed to deal with.

The middle of my back (right around the spine) hurts during both back extension and flexion. The area I'm talking about is a couple inches below the ribs in the back, right where the back pivots when you are holding your lower back tight and moving only your upper back.

It almost hurts like it would if you stretched too far, but I do stretch/foam roll regularly so I highly doubt it is that. Ibuprofen doesn't do a lot to help so it doesn't seem inflamed.

Anyone have any ideas?

Re: Strange Mid-Back Pain

If you dont have one already you might want to grab a 3 or 4 in PVC pipe for deeper rolling pleasure. Often times a 6in foam roller is too gentle... especially for the back. Tilt to the side to focus all pressure on the musculature on one side of the spine. Also go a little higher than you think it is.

Alternatively it could be your psoas acting up and refering pain to your back.

Re: Strange Mid-Back Pain

I had the same pain, mine was caused because I kept my head straight down during deadlift, as opposed to the looking 5-6 ft in front of you head postion which put a lot of strain on my mid back. Might not help, but maybe
