New,Acute and Sharp pain in ankle - 5k tommorow .. HELP!

Ok, I hate to sound desparate but, I am in need of some advice.

Today, while leisurely walking down the hall at work, I started to get an acute pain on the outside of my ankle right on the ankle bone. It got increasingly more painful as I took a few steps so I started limping just a little. It got worse. Finally, I stopped and leaned against a wall for a moment until the pain subsided. The whole thing took about 30 seconds. For the rest of the day, no pain.

Now (10 hours later), I keep sensing a slight, acute pain there but nothing too bad.

Here's where it gets interesting ...
I have signed up to run in my first 5k which is tommorow morning. I have not done any extra running to train or anything like that so I am sure that I have not overtained it.

Any advice on what it could be? Is it ok to run on it if it doesn't hurt?

I can't remember any time that I distinctly remember a sprain or a turn so I am at a loss as to what could have caused it.

If it matters at all - for the last several months I have been practicing POSE and have incorporated it into my CrossFit runs (one of which was a 5k about 2 months ago w/ no adverse side affects.)

Thanks for taking the time to read this. I am really excited about running in my first 'sanctioned' 5k. I am not a runner so it wouldn't kill me to not do it but I would like to participate.

It is hard to give any advice without actually examining your ankle. How ever if your ankle doesn't hurt in the morning you should be fine. I would however try running around a bit to see if running will induce any pain. If it does cause some pain you might want to buy a Lace-Up ankle brace to see if that helps, but it might be a good idea to sit this one out. The pain might intensify through out the race.

If it starts hurting during the race, don't be afraid to quit.

Your health is more important than finishing (and probably finishing poorly at that if you're injured).

You should probably be icing it right now....

Like Dean said... hard to really tell anything without examining... or pictures or movements that hurt. Shrug.

Thanks to both of you for replying.

You're right, without a proper examination it's near impossible to know what could be wrong.

I DID ice it last night and have tried bouncing and some POSE drills. It doesn't hurt when I do that. I could feel a slight pain at times when walking heel/toe and shifting.

I'm going to give it a shot and see what happens. I will definitely quit if it begins hurting during the race and I'll ice it a few more times this weekend.

THANKS!!

I finished with no problems (except that I was 20 sec off my PR - stupid hills!).

Thanks for your willingness to give some advice!
