Just Starting... I have some questions!

As far as the WOD goes, are most people just doing what the WOD for each [day] is? Or are you guys planning your workouts USING these exercises?

Wrist straps (standard): what are your thoughts on using these? I tried them yesterday for the first time and I felt like they did help a little. What lifts would you recommend using them with.

Last, check out my website FITnoke.com. We launched may 15th and have already received over 1,000,000 hits. Give me some feedback! Thanks everyone, can't wait to hear back.

Start with the "Starting Here" and "FAQ" section as to your first question. It's asked a Zillion times.

Straps are ***. None, unless they match your purse(per Coach Rip)

Your website looks a little hokey, but that's just my 1/2 cent

Is everyone on here so damn friendly??? haha

Thank you however, for your direction. What makes the site look "hokey"? If you would like to expand.

Re: Just Starting... I have some questions!

Don't mind Jay. He likes to antagonize.

Most people do the WOD as prescribed or else a scaled-down version. (Brand X Crossfit posts scaled versions on their website.)

I don't use wrist straps myself, but really can't see why they shouldn't be used. There's a lot of debate about this and it usually goes nowhere. My 2 cents is that some people can lift more with them, even with a trained grip. So why let a weak grip limit the stimulus you give to your posterior chain?

Best of luck with the website.

Re: Just Starting... I have some questions!

Folks here are friendly, but they expect that people new to Crossfit will investigate a bit before asking questions that are covered in the "FAQ" and "Start Here" and "What is CrossFit?" pages. Folks also do not appreciate posts (and it is against message board rules to make posts) that appear to be soley for the purpose of advertising a product or service. With that said, welcome. Poke around a bit. I guarantee you will learn a lot, no matter what your athletic background/experience has been.

With respect to your website, I cannot address the "hokey" comment, but I kept getting errors when I tried to load your site. I am also not sure I understand its purpose, but that may be because I could not get the entire page to load.

Nope, Jay is the nicest one here... sorry!

(j/k)

To answer your questions:
  • Some people do the WOD and that's all they do
  • Some people do the WOD plus CFEndurance Workouts
  • Some people do the WOD some days and sport specific work on others
  • Some people do the WOD that is posted at their affiliate which doesn't always match the main page WOD (that's what I do)
  • The combinations are endless - what you do depends on your ability and your goals

Wrist Straps:
  • Gay
  • Don't use them
  • You won't have them with you when you need them in an emergency situation so you'd better train your grip
  • The only pieces of equipment that I can remember Coach Rip recommending (other than the bar, weight, etc ...) are chalk, shoes, and belt.

Welcome to the boards and CF - my advice is to start slow, read all you can from the main page and from the boards (plus Crossfit Journal - great buy), and be sure to challenge yourself regularly.

3-2-1 Go!

Re: Just Starting... I have some questions!

Awesome! I am impressed with everyone's help so fast. I will read around and start getting to speak the language. I would have to agree however, the straps seem useless and against the grain of what the overall goal is.

Our site is Joomla based. So if you have anything older than IE8 or Firefox 3 you will run into problems. I wasn't trying to advertise, FITnoke is a regional site for my area. So I was just trying to get some feedback from everyone. Thanks and see you all around the forums.

Re: Just Starting... I have some questions!

I would say you can use straps if...

Your deadlift is greater than the amount that..

1. A traditional grip will allow

2. That an alternate grip will allos

3. That the hook grip will allow.

That's just me...I never used them and probably never will because of the purse Rip quote...

I also wasn't able to view your site.

Jay is funny.

Re: Just Starting... I have some questions!

Welcome Lee.

In response to the wrist strap question: I never use wrist straps in any WOD or lifting EXCEPT
-very heavy clean or snatch pulls (beyond 100%).

The reason I use straps on these pulls is that I know that I am not strong enough to clean/snatch that weight and the point of the exercise is to get a feel for what that weight is like and what it feels like to pull that much.

When working out and going for maxes I believe that you should only use as much weight as you can handle- no matter what the limiting factor is. If you aren't strong enough (or your grip isn't strong enough) then go down in weight. Become stronger, and lift that much without straps.
