Question for Police Officers-not fitness related

I figured this would be a good place to ask this since CF is big among law enforcement. I'm thinking about applying to be a cop. How is it being a cop? What are the pros and cons? Thanks in advance for the responses

Personally, I love it. I don't see myself doing anything else. That being said, it's certainly not a job for everyone. See if the agency you are thinking about applying to has a ride-along program, and get a bunch of those under your belt. Different sides of town, different shifts...get a feel for the people and the environment.

Hey Bobby, are you with JSO? My brother is at the academy now. He just started in April but he's loving it so far. He also did at least one ride along, not sure if he did more. I know he had a good time with it though. It was supposed to be for half a shift but he was having so much fun he stayed for the whole thing.

Re: Question for Police Officers-not fitness related

Depending on where you work (or how large of an agency), there might be a whole spectrum of job assignments available after a few years on the job: detective, traffic, mounted, marine, SWAT, training academy, crime prevention, community, evidence tech (CSI), narcotics, technology, etc. But if you bank on getting one of those assignments, and don't get it...then poor you. Long career ahead.

When you get put into an assignment/specialty that you enjoy, it's not even like work. But when you're in a bad assignment, it's dreadful.

I've been fortunate to score a most excellent assignment. Now if you'd force me into something like Monday through Friday day watch, doing CSI or traffic unit, I'd probably be writing about how much I hated my career choice.

But right now, look at the economy. I have only a couple words to explain how I feel about unemployment and 401Ks: JOB SECURITY and PENSION. Almost makes working Thanksgiving and Christmas worth it.

Best of luck in your endeavors!

1. You will be underpaid for what you are expected to do.
2. The hours are terrible and tough on families.
3. It is really dangerous.

It is still the best job I ever had.
