No, this is wrong. You use two spotters, and you spot the bar. You always spot the bar, on any exercise that requires a spot.

No it's not wrong, you spot the athlete. You CAN ALSO spot the bar with if you have two extra spotters on each side of the bar. For Gymnastics you always spot the athlete.

Links are of powerlifting competitions and SFW

Examplehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMKY6bGDe0k Time starts @ 11:30

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IiH-3...feature=relmfu @ 6:10

If you have 1 spot, then you spot the athlete, if you have two people you can spot the bar. If you have 3 people to spot then you are rocking

This is for Squats.

For bench press, you spot the bar.

Well of course in gymnastics you spot the athlete, because what else is there to spot? I was talking about barbell exercises.

If you have one spot for a squat, then you do not use a spotter, you squat inside a power rack with pins at the correct height. There is no safe, correct way for one person to spot a squat alone. If you have two spotters, then you can spot a squat correctly.

What if you have no power rack? My girlfriend when we used to workout together was too short to use the squat rack as well, so we had to have her lift form stands, with me spotting her.

FWIW 3 out of the last 7 days wod posts on http://www.crossfitfootball.com/ (wfs on mainsite but maybe not readers' comments) have photos from a powerlifting competition - ie a squat being spotted. Make of that as you will, people.

It would depend on how strong you are and how strong your girlfriend is. Basically, if you're sure that you can catch her working weight in your hands/the crooks of your elbows and not tear your biceps tendons, then it's okay to be the lone spotter behind her.

I never said that having a back spotter is not okay (although I definitely prefer not to, because I don't like having anyone that close to me when I'm doing work), I was just saying that a) you spot the bar, not the lifter and b) the back spotter is an extra, not the primary, and should not be the only one there. You'll notice that in two of the pictures, the lifter also has side spotters, and in the third, the weight on the bar is only 215.
