Could you substitute the following exercise for rowing (my gym is currently ultra-uncool):
- Put a Smith machine bar at about lowest-rib height. - Put your feet directly under the bar, or preferably further. - Bend your knees til your butt about hits your heels. - Jump up fast and hard and return to the starting position repeatedly. Your body kinda goes diagonally up and back. It kills your legs after about 50 jumps, but if you use your arms a bit (to mimic rowing), you can go longer. |

Janet-almost anything will work...mainly keep in mind the duration of the endeavor. A 500m row is between 1.5-2.0 min for most people. Dumbell or kettlebell swings are an excellent substitution. Jump rope is another great option. The movement you mention seems like a great possibility as well!
