Nose Bleed after Deadlifts?

During yesterday's 5x3 deadlifts I did my previous 1 rep max for a set of 3. Today after my warmup I went to blow my nose and blew a very large clot and some fresh blood. Understand, I never have had a nosebleed in my life, and it freaked me out a little to see so much blood in the tissue. My second thought was it must have been the deadlifts. Anyone have this problem, or should I go see a doctor?

What's the weather been like there - cold or dry? Have you been drinking enough water? Usually nosebleeds are just from dry or sensitive tissue.

Re: Nose Bleed after Deadlifts?

Blood pressure increases drastically during heavy lifting especially if you are holding your breath/letting it out slowly (which is good technique for very heavy lifts -- Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength gives a pretty good explanation on this). You'll see a bunch of powerlifters that get nosebleeds while they're pushing up really heavy weight.

Otherwise, it's just cold and dry out which can give bloody noses.

The weather has changed for the worse recently (I'm seeing the beginnings of the chapped hands I enjoy all winter long), but that's never affected me before. It may be a combination of factors. Just was curious if anyone else here has dealt with it before. You know the old saying about violently bloody noses enjoying company.

Re: Nose Bleed after Deadlifts?

Yeah, I know how bp spikes during heavy compound lifts, but it seems like bloody noses are relatively rare and usually only occur when several circumstances come together: very heavy lift, steroid or hgh use, and heavy stimulant use (common at powerlifting meets, or so I read).

Anyhow, it's just such a rarity for me to get a nosebleed I wondered if it's something I should worry about.

Re: Nose Bleed after Deadlifts?

if it makes you feel any better, I've gotten nosebleeds ( I mean real gushers) from doing handstand pushups...
