When one refers to performing an Olympic squat, is this the same as the front squat? I plead ignorance.

Typically when someone refers to an Olympic squat it is a back squat and it is an Olympic style squat as opposed to a Power Lifting style squat. With an Olympic squat the bar sits a bit higher across the shoulders, the stance is narrower, and you go deeper than a Power Lifting squat.
