21 MARCH: National Capital Region Military Affiliate Throwdown

This is a little short notice, but between myself, Capt John Hoffner with the Marines at Fort Meade, and LT Jeff Collins of the USCG HQ in DC we've instigated a challenge for all the military CrossFitters in the DC area.

Saturday the 21st of March, from 1000-1400 we will all meet in a spirit of camaraderie and competition with our comrades in arms!

Who is eligible?
All CrossFitters who are military members (active, reserve, guard or retired), military dependents, Dept of Defense civilians or military contractors--you are all eligible.

There will be two WODs, and awards for top male and female National Capital Region military CrossFitters! Your total time is your score so every second counts!

A small entry fee of $10 per individual is all the cost involved. The total fees collected will be donated in the names of the winners to the Wounded Warrior Project after the event.

You got my excited with the "National Capital Region", but unfortunately I'm in the NCR of a different country.

Yeah, sorry I didn't specify in the title. We have some Canadian Armed Forces folks at CF Fort Meade, but I don't think they will be joining us.
This is more is the spirit of healthy competition a d kinda impromtu. The idea built slowly and the arrangements have. Been mostly long distance.
The team trophy concept (mentioned on the flyer) has gone by the wayside. We will be focusing on individual competition with two hopper WODs.
You don't have to train at a nonprofit mil affiliate to come rock this event. Any Affiliate with military clients in the area is welcome to come on out!

Greetings again,

Due to some unforeseen circumstances, we have to move the location of the event. The Challenge is now located at 2nd and V streets SW DC.

Here is a link for directions. Parking is available on the street, or in the lot adjacent to the marina. Please do not park in the marina lot.
Time remains the same 1000-1400. Potential social to follow at an establishment on Barracks Row (8th St SE 20003).

Due to bad timing we had to contend with the National Marathon and we all had great difficulty getting there, as the highway off ramps put us all within the run route and the location was right outside of it. AT least one of ours from Ft Meade turned around frustrated. A late start saw about 20 competitors and a few spectators (along with one mascot) make the field.

The WOD was torturous:
200m run
2 rounds of
- 10 push press, (75lbs/45lbs)
- 10 kettlebell swings, (1.5 pood/1 pood)
- 10 ring dips
- 10 air squats
- 10 pull-ups
- 10 burpees
- 10 thrusters, (95 lbs/65lbs)
- 10 push-ups
Run 200 meters

We had some good competition. My congratulatios to the winners. Since I don't have full names I'll refrain from butchering spelling and ask Jeff Collins to post them here.

Next year, Potomac CrossFit offered to host, I think we all agreed that would be a great! Next time, more lead time & NOT on the day of a marathon--that is for sure!

Lots of lessons learned, all in all we had 5 affiliates represented and a few independent CrossFitters.

Glad it went well. I love the CF Ft. Meade logo, if I ever get down there I'll be sure to stop in!
