Afiliates who do not use Barbells?

Are there any affiliates out there who do not use barbells in training? Either due to financial issues or lack of space?

Now that I am an afffiliate, I am integrating Crossfit weight training into my current Outdoor Boot Camp Class. It is very hard to transport enough Barbells to the outdoor location where I train. I already use 50# or less sandbags for training and plan to strictly use Kettlebells and heavier Sandbags (75 - 150lb). I already own 10 each of 8k, 12k, 16k, and 24k kettlebells.

Just curious if any other affiliates do outdoor workouts without using barbells.

Re: Afiliates who do not use Barbells?

I do almost all kettlebells and body-weight. I'm starting to introduce barbell dead lift & cleans, but my intent is to stay kb focused. They are easier to teach, more approachable, take less space and easier to work with in general than barbells.
Of course since I've been teaching kbs for 6 yrs and have barely done barbell work, I'm a little biased!

The biggest issue I've had is with CrossFitter's from out of town who want to work out. So far most don't have kb experience and because of the way I run my classes it is tough to accommodate them

Dave,

Thanks for the reply. The only thing I can think of that a Barbell will be better for is Deadlift & Back Squat. I would love to talk to you about how you make this work.

My goal is to teach only 10 people at a time. I just got 40 Kettlebells. 10 each of 8k, 12k, 16k, 24k.

"The only thing I can think of that a Barbell will be better for is Deadlift & Back Squat" - what about clean, snatch, jerk?

I found this on the SS wikia:

Crossfit Philly WOD. Emphasis on dumbbells and kettlebells.

The Clean, Snatch, & Jerk are all things you can do with single or double Kettlebells. You can deadlift Kettlebells as well but since the weight on DL's is so high you would need 2 x 92kg Kettlebells. at $658 per Bell, Not Likely.

I see this all the time... affiliates not using barbells.

In my opinion, if you don't have bars and lots of weight, you're not doing CrossFit. At some point you simply cannot move enough weight with dumbells or kettlebells to affect any real, lasting adaptations in strength.

Good luck,
Zach

Cleans and snatches are WAY different between doing them on kettlebells and barbells.

I've been to 4 CF affiliates/facilities (one of which was outdoors) that, in their nascent stages, did not use or have barbells.

Does this mean you are not doing Crossfit if you do not lift massive amounts of weight? Does this mean that our Marines and Soldiers that are in Iraq are not doing Crossfit workouts because they only have access to Sandbags? I disagree with you on that. Plus, there are many ways to make exercises more difficult without adding extra weight. Have you ever Done a Clean and Jerk with a heavy Sandbag? Have you ever done it with One Arm?

Jeff,

My point was simply that you can do those things with Kettlebells. Things Like overhead Squat with Kettlebells are way harder.
