I've got flat feet, according to my doctor, really flat feet. I just got back from rehab where they got my feet fitted for the orthodics I'm getting in 2 or 3 weeks. But, I see orthodics as sort of a crutch for the most part. I know I won't be able to get a real arch back in my foot, but is there anything I can do to strengthen my feet so that I walk and run and perform as if I did have an arch? Or is there anything I can do that would just help my feet?

personal experience...sprinting on the balls of my feet leaves my arches fatigued, making me think they recover stronger. check out the free online book on gordonpirie.com for an explanation on how to run (especially pg 16).

also, check out this thread: http://www.crossfit.com/discus/messages/22/14212.html

barefoot running like chris said - forces you to avoid the whole heel-strike deal (running on the balls of your feet like eric said). If you have to run on non-barefoot-friendly surfaces, doing wrestling shoes or something similar - even chuck taylors - that have thin, flat soles with zero arch work well.
