Starting For newcomers to the CrossFit methodology

What are 5 X 5 and SS workouts? Should I be doing these with WOD? Who is Mark Rippetoe and the Starting Strength program?

5x5 is a program to increase strength and size doing 5 sets of 5 reps. There are different versions as some keep the same weight for all 5 reps and some increase with each set. Starting strength is a book by Mark Rippetoe. I would highly suggest getting it even if you have lifted for a while, it's a great book.

Mike is spot on.

Besides that though they are both really types of weightlifting programs geared towards increasing hypertrophy and strength. In terms of how this relates to CrossFit -- they are usually done separately, but you can mix them some if you want to as a lot of people on here have ME (max effort) days which are a lot like strength training. As always though, diet is the most important factor in gaining/losing weight (muscle mass or fat).
