MMA in NYC

I was curious to know if there are any good schools to learn some MMA. I live in the Bronx, but go to school dtown. I have absolutely no experience what so ever, the only thing i know how to do is throw a haymaker or get hit in the face. I've been crossfitting on and off for the past 2 years and would like to do crossfit plus this training. I just feel it never hurts to know how to defend yourself or others.

Any suggestions??

I don't know any MMA schools in the city, but I do know of a Sambo school:

Just a thought : MMA isn't self-defense. It's a sport. The rules of that sport don't apply on the street. Training MMA will make you a better fighter, but you still won't know what to do if someone comes at you with a knife, gun, or stick.

With that in mind, there are a few Krav Maga places in NYC, such as this one: http://kravmagafederation.com/schools.php?school=1

For BJJ I've heard good things about the Renzo Gracie academy (http://www.renzogracie.com WFS). Google spits out a few MMA gyms in the city, but I don't know how good they are.

Maybe this thread will help you out. http://www.sherdog.net/forums/f11/wh...k-city-407401/

Re: MMA in NYC

I would go to Renzo's school or if you want to train in the Bronx, the Jungle Gym is operated by a legit guy for BJJ and MMA.

Re: MMA in NYC

If you're looking to fight, or generally get into MMA, I'd suggest building a base aptitude (Jiu Jitsu, Boxing, Muay Thai) and then rounding out your game from there. Training in all tends to produce mediocrity in all. Trust me, concepts from one style do apply to others.
