Re: Seen at the globo yesterday

I'm almost scared to think how many would try to balanced the "arms" end of the bar to do bicep curls. "Won't this fall on me? It's those unsafe Crossfitters again!"

Re: Seen at the globo yesterday

Living in an isolated village of 5000, when the one "fitness center" closed, I thought I was out of luck. But no, I have seen the jewel of Bethel and it is the Teen Center. It has an adult weight room in the back with everything I could dream of (except maybe a few medicine balls). They even had a Concept II! Granted its about 20 years old, but still solid, and a 1 pood kettlebell.

I have been living vicariously through these posts, remembering the good old days of mirror monkies. But my dreams have been answered. I witnessed several classic moves that have been mention here over and over again, which just goes to say that we can find special people wherever we go.

I was super pumped to see a squat rack with an Oly bar as soon as I walked in, but it was being used by some guy doing (listening Stuart?) curls with about 5 pound on each end. It was so funny that I let him alone and played with the Concept II just to watch what else he would do. I was not dissapointed when he grabbed some dumbbells and stood in the rack to do some hammer curls. Classic. I was laughing as I hopped around discoverying my new toy box.

I finally got to use the squat rack and not 5 minutes later some kid comes in, still in street clothes, loads up about 45 pounds on each end of the barbell and askes my friend to spot him. Ofcourse, he said, he usually doesn't use a spotter, but he was going heavy today. So he proceeded to count outloud LOUD ENOUGH FOR THE WHOLE ROOM TO HEAR, about 8 reps. Then asked me if my friend and I were twins and left. I am so excited to go back.

The experience wouldn't be complete without a trio of meatheads coming in to "really blast the bar." They loaded up a bar and assissted each other in getting ten reps out, cause they couldn't lift the bar after about 7 without someone lifting it up for them.

I'm thinking about cancelling my cable. This is far more entertaining.

Re: Seen at the globo yesterday

I work out at a Y. The thing that really gets me is seeing people do things that look unsafe. I see a lot of people, usually guys, throwing their joints into awful-looking locked positions, and it always makes me grit my teeth. Also, people lifting so much weight that they thrust their heads forward and punch their shoulders up to their ears and strain their backs. They're just doctor bills waiting to happen.

But I don't have a leg to stand on. Until I started CF I was totally that girl on the elliptical with a magazine.

Outside of the gym context, I once found myself teaching a private bellydance class to a group of very Orthodox Jewish women. Many of them wore their tights, wool skirts, wool turtlenecks, fancy gold and diamond jewelry, and street shoes in class. Some of them kept their wigs on. They chewed gum (in a dance class!!!), answered their cel phones, and had detailed conversations with one another. Needless to say, not much sweat was broken there.

Oh, OK, stupidest thing I've seen recently: the other day, while doing the WOD, running my 400 meters, guy is on the track at the Y, leisurely walking, against the flow of runner traffic, with his toddler.
