Substitutions for Squats-knee pain

Recently my husband started crossfit with me-woo hoo! He had surgery on a torn meniscus about 4 yrs. ago. We haven't done any weight-bearing squats yet but he's noticed the knee pain re-surfacing. Any suggestions on substitutions for squat exercises? Thanks!

Before looking to change the exercise, any chance you can have him post a video of his squat? It could very easily be technique issues. (Even if he believes his technique is correct).

Re: Substitutions for Squats-knee pain

I've had 2 meniscus surgeries (both martial arts related) and squat with little to no pain during or after. I do get some swelling after many, many squats or thrusters, but prudent icing after the WOD helps immensely.

Hopefully his Dr. told him the knee will never be the same again. Actually, back up. Did he have a meniscus tear repaired? Or did he have junk removed? I had junk removed both times.

A repaired tear can be whole different story, and I can't speak with any experience on that.

Re: Substitutions for Squats-knee pain

I had a repaired tear and lost over half of my meniscus (including an ACL graft from my hamstring). I had knee pain until I started squatting - since then I've had no pain at all.

Re: Substitutions for Squats-knee pain

Hubby's knee pain doesn't seem to be an issue right now. He had a torn meniscus and some arthritis. Since the posting we've done weight bearing exercises-no knee problems. Actually, we both have better squat form with a 2 x 4 under our heels-not much flexibility here. Is the 2 x 4 permitted in CF?Thanks!

Re: Substitutions for Squats-knee pain

There are a plethora of testimonials in which people had knee pain and shoulder pain, and upon CrossFitting those pains were alleviated.

The sooner you guys can get proper coaching and enhance your flexibility (so that you won't require a 2x4"), the sooner all the aches and pains will be alleviated.

Don't know if that helped, but good luck!
