Re: Mumford Procedure and recovery
Hi Dr. Rockett,
I hope all is well and your training hard for the regionals. It kills me to not be able to compete this year. With that being said I was hoping you can provide me some insight. I'm back training, over head presses are not a problem and with what I assume is normal pain for 3 months post op. Pull ups, deadlifts, cleans...not a problem. My concern and major problem is that I can't do more than 3 pushups or burpees and barely do a bench press movement with just the bar. Prior to surgery my bench press was around 315 and incline presses at 275. When I do a bench press movement I get this fleshy popping, kinda front delt shifting muscle pain...very bad. It occurs in the area where the surgeon did the incision. Is it possible that the debraidment of the labrum where he cleaned up fraying is the source? Is this normal? I know from research that the bench press movement is the last to recover. I'm 3 months post op on the 7th and very concerned. Thank you, Jason |

Re: Mumford Procedure and recovery
Hi Dr. Rockett,
Everything is going well other then what appears to be scar tissue in the front deltoid which is causing a lot of pain and an inability to do flat benching. My questions is this; my right shoulder is bigger and fuller than the one I had surgery on. Very much disproportionate. Is that normal and will the fullness come back eventually? I hope all is well with you. Thank you, Jason |

Re: Mumford Procedure and recovery
Hey OP here. Just want to open this up again because 2 years now after my Mumford Procedure I have been experiencing pain in the same exact spot. Also my rhomboids have basically always been spasming ever since I have the surgery. Tried therapy with no success. I have to roll my rhomboids everyday to avoid tightness and pain through my subscapularis and ac joint. Even took the last 4 months off because I my specialist thinks that from my time with an olympic lifting coach, my plica in my right knee got thick and now catches underneath my knee cap. 4 months with no lifting, and the shoulder pain is worse. Yay! More surgery.
I'm getting an X-ray next week before I see my specialist. I'm seeing a different doctor than who did the mumford procedure and after I told him what I had done he said "That's the exact opposite of what I would have done". In other words the surgeon F'ed me over. He thinks I might have developed a bone spur because there is a sensitive bump on top of my clavicle. It also pops a lot now and when the joint isn't popping I can roll my shoulder and I can here all the tiny knots under my shoulder blade crunching around... There is one point at the bottom of my subscapularis that when I roll it out, I can feel it focus all in my ac joint, and the pain and sensitivity go away for the day, but it always 100% of the time comes back. |

Re: Mumford Procedure and recovery
Turns out I have a bone spur that grew on the top of the surgery site on my clavicle. Just took it a couple years to **** everything off in there. Nothing serious it is fairly large though. Going in for a Revision Distal Clavicle Excision as the doctor calls it. He's just gonna grind it down so its flat again. Then off it for like 6 weeks till I'm good to go. At least I still have olympic lifts in my future.
I'm stuck at an LA Fitness for the time being so no overhead jerks or snatches for awhile. Sticking to kettle bell work and any plyo stuff through the main site and using LA Fitness for core strength... bleh |
