Buying first bar: Rogue Ohio vs Chan Bar

I am in the market for my first bar.
Its coming down to the choice between the Ohio and the Chan bar.
Thoughts and opinions are welcome.

I went with the Ohio Bar. The knurling felt perfect in my hands (black zinc version). Also, the Chan bar has center knurling, which I can't stand. Something to keep in mind too if you plan to do cleans, since it could chew up your collarbone area.

Re: Buying first bar: Rogue Ohio vs Chan Bar

I have the chan bar (can't really comment on the ohio bar). But I was looking for a bar with centre knurling because I already have pendlay bearing bar.

I actually really like the chan bar, because the centre knurling is so soft and doesn't really feel like knurling. So I have had no issues with the chan bar knurling hurting when I do cleans. What I also like to is that the non knurling part is a bit longer and therefore the outer knurling won't scrape your knees (just because of this I actually prefer to use my chan bar in wods with a lot of cleans, more than my pendlay bar).

But either choice, you won't regret your purchase. Rouge bars are always worth it.

You know they are the same bar with different knurling right?

The chan bar has a center knurl and more space before knurl on the ends to save shin scrape.

I went Ohio with black oxide at home. Big step up from the Rogue bar (which I use at the gym)

^^^that's pretty much it. We have the black oxide Ohio at our gym, mostly because most of the people using it didn't want a bar with center knurling. The Ohio quickly became my favorite bar, and I find myself going to it for most everything - even compared to some of the higher end bearing bars.

You will be happy either way once you make a call on the center knurl. The bar is pretty awesome. Have the ohio in the garage and whip is PERFECT. Just a great product.

Re: Buying first bar: Rogue Ohio vs Chan Bar

Ya not sure if the knurling is cut differently between the bars.

I love the knurl on my ohio - seems perfect balance of grip and "not-ripping-my-flesh" haha

I was amazed how quiet the bar is when dropped (loaded with bumpers of course), no clanging noise which I assume is due to the tighter tolerances it is machined to (compared to the Rogue bar).

You'll love it.

I knew that the black oxide would need some TLC to avoid rusting (a squirt and rub of WD-40 has been perfect so far). The black oxide does feel like a bare steel bar, highly recommend it.

Re: Buying first bar: Rogue Ohio vs Chan Bar

What does everyone think of the knurling difference between the two of them? The outside knurl, not the center as obviously the Ohio doesn't have it.

Originally I'd read that the Ohio's knurl was more aggressive than the original Rogue and the Chan was more aggressive than the Ohio, but Rogue's staff then told me that they're both the same.

Re: Buying first bar: Rogue Ohio vs Chan Bar

Main difference other than the centre knurl by the looks of things is the knurled sections. This can be seen when looking at the chan bar photos (ohio and chan side by side).
The chan bar knurl is positioned to not hit your shins on dead lifts.
My main question is would this affect sumos or closer grip bench work.

Re: Buying first bar: Rogue Ohio vs Chan Bar

It comes down to what you are planning to use the bar for.

If you are going to do more powerlifting, get the chan bar. If you are going to do a lot of mixed use and oly, get the Ohio bar. If you close grip bench, get the Ohio bar. If you need grip in the center of the ohio bar, you can wrap the center with some grip tape.
