Anyone taking supplements to maximize the gains form the exercise programs and diet (Zhone)?

I am not a huge fan of supplements.

Most seem to just prey on the part of human nature that says if we could just find a magic pill to help us reach our goals, everything would be OK. The truth is most are basically inert and, sometimes, cause undesired side effects without any real increase in performance.

My list is:

1. Food - by far the most important. If you diet is sound you are 99% good to go and will see the benefits very soon. The issue is most of our diets are not sound. You are fighting an uphill battle trying to positively change your appearance and performance without getting your food intake straight. Many people have a huge difficulty accepting and doing something about this.

2. A decent multivitamin - Nothing fancy here. Just a little something extra to cover what you miss in #1.

3. EFA supplement. Your body needs essential fatty acids for many processes and it cannot synthesize them from anything else. Most people do not eat enough essential fatty acids even if their eating plan is otherwise really great.

4. A whey protein powder. I like "Just Protein" from I would shy away from pre-made shakes/drink packets that include carbs, fats, artificial sweeteners, additives, etc. Instead stick to a whey protein only powder. You can add what you need to the shake you make yourself. This is not necessarily a must have item. But a well designed shake, by you since you know your needs for that meal, is great in a pinch.

After this point the cost : return ratio on supplements seems to take a sharp nose dive.

Put me pretty deep into the real food camp.

That said, I take fish oil (PFO, 1 tsp/day), a good multivitamin, and glucosamine/chondroitin for my 52-year-old beat up joints.

Other than that--lots of salmon, sardines, berries, dark leafy greens, nuts and seeds, a wide variety of colorful veggies and fruits.

Most of us are in a similar camp to Jonathan, though I add creatine to the list. And like Susie, glucosamine can be a good choice for certain individuals.

Doctor G and some others suggest supplementing magnesium and zinc. Doesn't do anything for me but you can give it a shot.

Some people add a fiber supplement if their bowels have trouble with the Paleo diet.

There are some experimental supplements talked about by folks like Robb Wolf, stuff I can't even remember the names of. If you like living on the cutting edge you might enjoy checking this kind of thing out. But most of us live in the above.

My brother used it, it helped him gain quite a bit; when he stopped taking it, it helped him lose quite a bit. I've never wanted to use it.

I only supplement a Men's one a day vitamin and whey protein, the vitamins to fill any holes my diet doesnt take care of, and the protien because it's cheaper than trying to get all my blocks from meat, eggs or dairy. Plus it's quick. I eat fish often enough and flax seed every day to fill my Omega fatties.

Fish oil, U-Trition Liquid Multi (the best out there), ON Whey, ON Casein (before bed), and Myogenix After Shock for post workout recovery. I've mentioned it before on a thread and I'll say it again.... After Shock after devastating workouts will assist recover more than anything out there. Try it. With 12 almonds, its a 4 block meal.
