I have a question about shin and knee position on the box squat vs and Olympic squat. In reading about and practicing the box squat it seems, especially with a wider stance, that you can really the shins perpendicular to the floor. However, with an Olympic squat, even when i feel i am sitting back into the squat, that my knees and shins come forward a bit. They are not out severly over my toes, but they do move more than in the box squat. Do both squats involve the sitting back motion, and the box squat just entials less movement of the shins and knees?

the box squat and oly squat are as different as you can get in terms of horizontal hip and knee movement. the oly squat's primary concern is maintaining an upright torso. in order to do that, the hips must travel as vertically as possible, and for that to happen, the knees must travel forward significantly.

And, Anton, please don't worry about the normal knee travel causing damage to your knees. The old "don't go past parallel" nonsense has been disproven. Plus, there a many folks on this board who have gone from a powerlifting style to an Olympic style and have experienced positive results.
