Is it ok to use dumbells for the kettlebell exercises in the WOD? I have the hex dumbells from 5 to 50 lbs. and can't really justify the high price of kettlebells when I already have these. I have also made Dan John's core-blaster handle from iron pipe to use in kettlebell drills. Will it make any real difference in result if I use the dumbells for the kettlebell drills?

It's a little easier to cap yourself in the teeth with a dumbell, so just be a little more careful.
