Think Thin bars
I noted in the latest CFJ that Rob packs Think Thin bars on his climbs. Has anyone on here tried them? Looks like they pack 20g protein. They have something called Think Five, too, which, I believe contains three servings of fruit and two veggies (or maybe it's the other way around). Any reviews would be appreciated as I'm always on the lookout for good, portable snacks.

Re: Think Thin bars
I bought some of these at whole foods to eat in a pinch. The ones I tried so far are pretty good. As these bars go they seem to have a really good nutrional makeup.

Re: Think Thin bars
I thought the brownie ones were disgusting when I tried them. I prefer the Clif Nectar Bars. When I was allowing legumes and grains I also would eat the Builders Bars. The Builders Bars taste amazingly good, especially the chocolate mint.

Re: Think Thin bars
The Think Thin bars are full of sugar alcohols and other nastiness. The Clif Nectar bars and things of that sort have a lot less gunk in them.

Re: Think Thin bars
I am a huge fan of Lara Bars and Trio bars... both solid food and little gunk factor if any.

Re: Think Thin bars
Recently saw a new "raw" bar made under Dr. Weils name. It was something along the lines of a lara bar--very pure.

Re: Think Thin bars
Always on the lookout for on-the-go bars, but I just looked at Trio, Lara, and Dr. Weils and found the following nutritional info (random sampling of the bars). Would be interested what people thought of these for a Zone Diet (what I'm just started). It seems like I'd have to find another protein source and I'm worried about the sugar content. Anyway, here's the info:
Trio Calories: 170 Calories from fat: 100 Serving size: 35g Total Fat 12g Total Carbohydrate 15g Saturated Fat 1.5g Dietary Fiber 2g Sugars 6g Protein 5g Trans Fat 0g Lara Calories 220 Fat Calories 120 Total Fat 13 g Saturated Fat 2.5 g Poly USF 5 g Mon USF 5 g Total Carbs 25 g Fiber 5 g Sugars 18 g Protein 5 g Dr. Weil's Bar Calories 190 Fat Calories 70 Total Fat 7 g Saturated Fat 2 g Total Carb 27 g Fiber 4 g Sugars 20g Protein 4 g |

Re: Think Thin bars
Brian,
As you mentioned, they're all a bit low on the protein side. I don't know much about the Trio bar but I'd bet the Lara and Weil Bars have no added sugar, meaning the sugar content is from a natural source (dates, raisins, etc.). A great product that I have been eating for a few years now are "Organic Food Bars". There are several different varieties but I stick to the "Protein" bar. Here is the ingredients list: Organic Almond Butter, Organic Brown Rice Protein, Organic Date Paste, Organic Premium Agave Nectar, Organic BioSprouts-Flax, Organic Biodynamic (Demeter) Raisins, Organic Sesame Seeds And the Nutrition Profile: Total Fat 13g Total Carbohydrate 33g Total Dietary Fiber 9g Sugars 22g Protein 22g Calories 330 As for Zone compliance, the Pro/Carb/Fat ratio is 25/40/35. Not exact but pretty darn close for a bar that contains nothing but pretty good stuff. Throw in a couple bites of jerky and you're golden. More info available at www.organicfoodbar.com. |

Re: Think Thin bars
The Trio is the best, if you need a bar, ingredients listed below, Note lower carbs/sugars
Calories from fat: 100 Total Fat 12g Total Carbohydrate 15g Saturated Fat 1.5g Dietary Fiber 2g Sugars 6g the rest of these bars are CANDY BARS. Your body really doesn't care if the sugar is dates, raisins, mangos or table sugar, it's sugar and these bars are HIGH in carbs. If you need carbs, like carbs, want carbs, eat these bars, but you could easily get by with Jerky along with a handful of nuts, and if you're needing something sweet, then almond butter or a few berries(sugar again, but lower carb then say apple). I'd make my own bars and they'd contain fat/protein, very very little carbs, if any. While this might seem extreme, I'm eating on the premise of very low carbs, via Robb Wolf and Art DeVaney. My Fitday log is in my signature. |

Re: Think Thin bars
I'll parrot the Lara bars as well and would go as far as to call them the best bar on the market. In fact, I hope my wife is not reading this post cuz I'm currently having a hot and heavy affair with the Apple Pie and Cashew Pie flavors.
Only eat that stuff after a hard workout though. Sugar content (although natural) is a bit high (at least compared to my other paleo meals). |
