Twitching while rolling?

I was just rolling my glutes with the tp therapy ball (just starting to address them now!) and I noticed that there were one or two points that as I rolled over them adjacent muscle started twitching, stopping as soon as I rolled past the point. Just curious what this is actually is? I'm assuming a trigger point but I would be interested to hear from someone more knowledgeable in this regard. Thanks

Re: Twitching while rolling?

Typically, muscles twitch because of insufficient oxygen to them or overall fatigue much like you would get when you get cramps when you're tired.

Decrease in ATP production leads to the inability to remove ADP off of the myosin which can lead to some sustained or twitchy contractions.

Fairly basic muscle physiology.

So in your case, if it's an adjacent muscle it may just be twitching from decrease in blood flow if you're moving over and blocking an artery blood supply to that muscle transiently. It could also be a combination with the muscle being tight.

Pretty much nothing to worry about and as long as soft tissue work improves it as well as other mobility work it'll go away
